Kathleen Hessman, aspiring broadcast journalist
Career Q & A Interview: Part 2 of 5-Building up professional experience and getting help along the way
Comm Creatives-People:
Youʼve been involved with broadcast journalism in various ways since high school, whatʼs your favorite, radio or TV?
Kathleen Hessman:
“Radio and television mean a lot to me in different ways. When I did radio in high school, I was able to have control over what I said and what music I played on the air. With television, I loved being able to share news with the public about what was going on at our high school. If I had to choose one it would be television. I love being able to talk on camera, nothing beats it! While radio is amazing as well as talking to the public, I love the face-to-face connection you get with television.”

What did your mentors teach you along the way to help you improve and succeed so far?
Kathleen Hessman:
“I have been very fortunate to have some great mentors while in high school and currently in college. One was my TV and Radio Production teacher in high school. Through the classes I took with him, I was able to come to Quinnipiac with the basic skills for editing in Final Cut Pro and a basic idea for editing sound in Protools. All of the mentors I have had are very passionate about what they do which has inspired me to be very passionate about what I do as a broadcast journalism major. I have made the most of my time at Quinnipiac, getting involved with the campus radio and television stations. One of my mentors, Professor Kenn Venit, has always motivated me and has pushed me further into pursuing my goals. He has made such an impact on my life just from taking his class and working with him outside the classroom. I am able to speak with him about anything and he has always given me great advice. He is one man whom I will always be grateful to have in my life.”
