Career Q & A Interview: Part 1 of 5-Introduction
Comm Creatives-People:
What inspired you to get into broadcast journalism?
Kathleen Hessman:
“Ever since I was young I have been involved with theater and singing. With those activities, you are always in front of people, thus performing. I loved doing theater so much I pursued it throughout high school and college. However, when I was in high school, I had a major realization: while I originally wanted to major in theater or theater education in college, I realized that I wanted to major in something more practical. I became fascinated with television around 8th Grade; I hosted the school’s morning show a few times. This helped me realize that I could pursue television. When I was very little, my brother, his best friend and I would do fake radio shows. My brother and his best friend had the technical equipment to broadcast at a very tiny range. When I got to high school I began doing radio shows with a few of my friends. I loved talking and playing the music and being part of a weekly personalized broadcast. As the years went on I discovered myself doing more radio shows and began hosting a television show every week for my high school on the public access channel. This especially inspired me to get into broadcast journalism and I have loved doing it ever since!”
