Career Q & A Interview: Part 4 of 5-Recommended Equipment

Comm Creatives:

What type of camera and lenses to you use and what basic equipment would you recommend for people who want to begin doing photography?

Natasha Jahangir Butt:

“The equipment I use— Camera body: Canon 20D SLR; Lenses: 17-85mm F/4.0-5.6, 50mm F/1.8, 24mm F/2,8; Flash: Canon speedlite 430EX

For beginners, it really depends on their budget, but for whatever camera they end up buying I recommend them practicing and getting to know their camera before investing more in it through lenses etc.”

Design and draw for yourself. It’s important to keep your creative juices flowing, so fill up some sketch pad pages because designing for a client can suck the juice out of your creativity. Michael Hackney, aspiring graphic designer

Career Q & A Interview: Part 5 of 5-Essential Knowledge for Graphic Designers

Comm Creatives:

What are the essential reference materials, professional organizations and people to know for graphic designers?

Michael Hackney:

“Essential reference materials are art-history books. It’s important to understand art history because it helps the artist to understand why other artists/designers made their choices.  There are many professional organizations out there for creatives: American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Graphic Artists Guild, Graphic Communications Association, National Association of Photoshop Professionals. I personally like AIGA because they hold several FREE events throughout the year, where you can meet other new up-and-coming and creative designers.”

Career Q & A Interview: Part 1 of 5-Life Long Artistic Training

Comm Creatives:

How did you decide that graphic design was the career you wanted?

Michael Hackney:

“Upon entering middle school I decided to enroll in the art program. This allowed me to explore and experiment with charcoal drawings, computer-art and painting. I also enrolled in the art program in high school which allowed me to continue drawing. After graduation, I decided I wanted a career that involved something loved to do, which is to create. Additionally, I had a part-time job working as a clerk at a law firm. This allowed me to get a feel for what it would be like to work in the real world. I’ve met interesting people who were enthusiastic about their careers and they suggested I should do something I love to do.”

Michael Hackney, aspiring graphic designer, “I decided to study fine arts and major in graphic because I enjoy painting and drawing. As a child I spent most of my time drawing my favorite cartoon characters and constructing buildings with Lego toys.”
